Most marks lost in PSLE Math aren't lost to topics a child never learned. They're lost to small, repeatable habits — the kind that show up the same way, question after question, once you know what to look for. Here are the seven we see most often, and what actually fixes each one.
A student reads half a sentence, spots a familiar number pattern, and starts calculating before finishing the question. The fix isn't "read more carefully" as a vague instruction — it's a concrete habit: underline the question being asked before writing a single number.
Model drawing exists because it turns a wordy problem into a picture a student can actually reason about. Students under time pressure often skip straight to arithmetic — which works for simple problems and quietly falls apart on multi-step ones.
"The ratio of boys to girls is 3:2" and "3/5 of the class are boys" describe overlapping but different things, and PSLE questions deliberately test whether a student can tell them apart.
A question starts in metres, converts to centimetres partway through, and a student carries the wrong unit into the final answer. This is almost always a speed problem, not a knowledge gap — it's what happens when a student is racing the clock instead of checking each step.
An answer of "450 children" for a question about a classroom, or a discount that makes an item cost more than it started at, should trigger a second look. Building the two-second habit of asking "does this number make sense?" catches a surprising number of careless errors before they cost marks.
Paper 1 has no calculator, and small arithmetic slips compound across a multi-step question. The fix is unglamorous: frequent, short, low-stakes practice that builds speed and accuracy together, rather than occasional long sessions that build neither.
This one isn't about math at all — it's about whether a child keeps trying. A student who feels like they're always losing tends to stop engaging with practice altogether, which is precisely the problem a weekly league sized to a child's own level is designed to solve.
